Parashat Chayei Sara is the 5th weekly Torah portion in the annual Jewish cycle of Torah reading.
Torah Portion: Genesis 23:1-25:18
Chayei Sarah (“The Life of Sarah”) opens as Sarah dies and Abraham buys the Cave of Machpelah to bury her. Abraham sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac. The servant meets Rebecca at a well, and Rebecca returns with the servant to marry Isaac. Abraham remarries, has more children, and dies at age 175. [1]

As Hashem had made a covenant with Abraham that his legacy will be continued with an heir, Abraham now takes action. He sends his main servant and disciple, his chief of staff, back to his family in Haran to find a suitable wife. While he is not named, the sages understood him to be Eliezer.
Eliezer is laden with gifts for the dowry. Having learned from Abraham, Eliezer prays to Hashem that the Isaac’s future wife will have the spirituality and honor that will partner with Isaac in this new religion, the adoration of the one, true G-d. Rebecca’s display of concern for Eliezer and his entourage, as well as his camels, convinces him he’s found the right mate.
No one could be happier at the prospect of Rebecca marrying Isaac than her brother Laban, who will figure prominently in the next generation. Laban usurps his father in discussing his sister’s fate after seeing all the wealth displayed by Abraham’s messengers. Rebecca decides to accompany Eliezer back to meet Isaac and becomes his wife, our second Matriarch.
Would it be proper to consider that Rebecca as well was impressed by the wealth and hence her quick consent? Consider her later actions that testify to her devotion to Abraham’s legacy and the worship of a righteous G-d that commands us to love the stranger and respect our fellows. She thus proves that this is her primary consideration.

Chayei Sarah (“La vida de Sara”) comienza cuando Sara muere y Abraham compra la Cueva de Macpela para enterrarla. Abraham envía a su sirviente a buscar una esposa para Isaac. El sirviente se encuentra con Rebecca en un pozo y Rebecca regresa con el sirviente para casarse con Isaac. Abraham se vuelve a casar, tiene más hijos y muere a los 175 años. [1]

Como Hashem había hecho un pacto con Abraham de que su legado continuaría con un heredero, Abraham ahora toma medidas. Envía a su principal sirviente y discípulo, su jefe de personal, de regreso con su familia en Harán para encontrar una esposa adecuada. Si bien no se le nombra, los sabios entendieron que se trataba de Eliezer.
Eliezer está cargado de regalos para la dote. Habiendo aprendido de Abraham, Eliezer ora a Hashem para que la futura esposa de Isaac tenga la espiritualidad y el honor que acompañarán a Isaac en esta nueva religión, la adoración del único y verdadero Di-s. La muestra de preocupación de Rebecca por Eliezer y su séquito, así como por sus camellos, lo convence de que ha encontrado a la pareja adecuada.
Nadie podría estar más feliz ante la perspectiva de que Rebeca se case con Isaac que su hermano Labán, quien ocupará un lugar destacado en la próxima generación. Labán usurpa a su padre al discutir el destino de su hermana después de ver todas las riquezas desplegadas por los mensajeros de Abraham. Rebecca decide acompañar a Eliezer a encontrarse con Isaac y se convierte en su esposa, nuestra segunda matriarca.
¿Sería correcto considerar que Rebecca también quedó impresionada por la riqueza y, por tanto, por su rápido consentimiento? Considere sus acciones posteriores que dan testimonio de su devoción al legado de Abraham y la adoración de un Dios justo que nos ordena amar al extraño y respetar a nuestros semejantes. De esta manera demuestra que ésta es su principal consideración.
